HOMEBASE JOBS UK CAREERS WITH HOME RETAIL GROUP PLC OWNER ALSO OF ARGOS AND HABITAT

From: Dude Music

If you have reached this page, perhaps you are considering taking a job with Homebase, part of the Home Retail Group.

When looking for work with Homebase you are presumably looking for an employer who cares as much about its employees and customers as its share price, or in other words that it takes its 'corporate responsibility' seriously.

Does Homebase take its corporate responsibility seriously? Let's discuss this!

I used to work at ASDA just as Archie Norman took over to save it when he used Richer Sounds as a role model for how retail should be run. It was a great place to work as all the old school managers were under the thumb by the directors via top cat Archie to actively be nice to the lower rung employees; there was no Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. Manager with all staff on first name terms. The company was really nice to me and so I was realy nice to the customers.... simple... the company was minutes from bankruptcy... then it wasn't... it worked! Thank you Julian Richer for letting ASDA know how to treat people right at that time!

Please note that I have checked with Richer Sounds as mentioned above, and they are 'happy to say' they themselves are NOT INVOLVED with government workfare! Well done Richer Sounds!

There were a lot of students working there at ASDA, and other than the work being mind numbingly boring and sometimes even painful (I had to come off wines and spirits as it was screwing with my knees and I had to go onto checkouts... even more boring but less painful!) it was cool and quite fun for that stint especially competing for fastest checkout operator (which we had to stop as the customers couldn't handle it and thought we didn't care... but we did of course and wanted to keep waitng times down... you understand).

So does the board at Home Retail Group PLC (owner of Homebase and ARGOS and HABITAT) like Archie, put the pressure on the bullies, the grumpies, the nasties and weed them out, or does it just want dirt cheap near on 'slaves' for dirty work if they are legally available to help the bottom line at any price so long as it isn't financial?

Will Homebase be like ASDA was when I worked there in the early 90s? Will the managers respect you as a shop floor worker?

Well perhaps not! You see there is a major enemy to the hard fought for minimum wage that has been brought in called 'workfare' for want of a more accurate name.

The 'Nasty Party' in government has been sending jobseekers on this workfare by any other name, under a number of aliases such as 'work experience', the 'work programme' and mandatory placements.

The government claimed the 'work experience' was entirely voluntary until the High Court recently ruled that that claim had been a bunch of beef burger (horse play!) nonsense.

So where does Homebase come in to all this? Well it has recently been reported by the Guardian that Homebase has allegedly been involved in the government 'workfare' schemes, and indeed Boycott Workfare have apparently received insider information that this has been at the expense of work for the staff who are paid 'properly' i.e. at least minimun wage!

So if you are looking for a 'proper paid job' with Homebase you might want to know, is the company likely to replace your potential overtime in your new job, or your actual new job at some point, with 'freebies' supplied by government?

Is Home Retail Group PLC (Homebase, ARGOS, Habitat) the sort of company that is happy to have 'staff' they are not required to pay minumum wage to, 'forced' to work there only because they fear losing their benefits?!

Is Homebase where YOU want to work? Does their alleged involvement with 'workfare' make you think twice about how they are likely to treat YOU and the importance of YOUR work life.

Think carefully before applying for a particular job! Your work life is a massive part of your short fragile existence on this tiny rock in space... make it a good experience, don't let a bad workplace culture ruin your life!

You might perhaps wish to avoid 'work experience' or any UK company that is part of 'workfare'... in the opinion of this author, it isn't pretty... in fact I think the whole thing stinks!

MAKE NO MISTAKE IF YOU WORK FOR FREE IT MUST BE YOUR VOLUNTARY CHOICE WITH NOBODY BENDING YOUR ARM! UK GOVERNMENT WORKFARE POLICIES ARE NOT VOLUNTARY! WHY DO YOU THINK OXFAM PULLED OUT OF THE SCHEMES?! I SPOKE TO THEM MYSELF! THEY DID THE RIGHT THING! THANK YOU OXFAM! 8O) You're ace!

By the way I have alway previously voted Conservative (except for MEP candidates) but now I wish I hadn't! I am not one of the extreme left wing groups the 'Nasty Party' is so fond of blaming any voter discontent on!

I personally do not and will not as it stands shop at Homebase or ARGOS, both Home Retail Group PLC owned retailers. I'll shop where I can be more certain that the retailer is not taking advantage of the most financially disadvantaged in society! I strongly recommend Home Retail Group PLC re-consider their employment practises if they want this dude to shop with them again.!

Homebase and ARGOS are well known national brands and I do hope they will consider just how important it is that they are ethical about how they employ (or don't employ) their workers!

Take care and be good to each other.

Cheers,

Dude.
